นครศรีธรรมราช
ตั้งอยู่ทางตอนกลางของภาคใต้ ห่างจากกรุงเทพมหานคร ประมาณ ๘๐๐ กิโลเมตร
ทิศเหนือ ติดต่อกับจังหวัดสุราษฏร์ธานีและอ้าวบ้านดอน
ทิศใต้ ติดต่อกับ จังหวัดสงขลา จังหวัดพัทลุง และ จังหวัดตรัง
ทิศตะวันออก ติดต่อกับอ่าวไทยเป็นชายฝังทะเล มีความยาวตั้งแต่ตอนเหนือของอําเภอขนอม ลงไปทางใต้ของอําเภอหัวไทรประมาณ ๒๒๕ กิโลเมตร
ทิศตะวันตก ติดต่อกับจังหวัดสุราษฏร์ธานีและจังหวัดกระบี่
ในปัจจุบัน แบ่งการปกครองออกเป็น ๒๓ อำเภอ ตือ
1. อำเภอเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช 2. อำเภอพรหมคีรี
3. อำเภอลานสกา 4. อำเภอฉวาง
5. อำเภอพิปูน 6. อำเภอเชียรใหญ่

ระยะทางจากจังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราชไปยังจังหวัดใกล้เตียง ดังนี้

ลักษณะภูมิประเทศ
ภูมิประเทศของจังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราชมี แตกต่างไปตามลักษณะ ของ เทือกเขานครศรีธรรมราช ซึ่งเป็นเทือกเขาที่มีความยาวตามแนวยาวของคาบสมุทร เป็นผลให้ ลักษณะภูมิประเทศของจังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราช แบ่งได้เป็น ๓ ส่วน คือ
๑. บริเวณเทือกเขาตอนกลาง
ได้แก่บริเวณเทือกเขานครศรีธรรมราช มีอาณาเขตตั้งแต่ตอนเหนือของ จังหวัดลงไป ถึงตอนใต้สุด บริเวณพื้นที่ของอําเภอที่อยู่ในเขตเทือกเขาตอนกลางได้แก่ อําเภอสิชล อําเภอขนอม อําเภอท่าศาลา อําเภอเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช อําเภอลานสกา อําเภอพรหมคีรี อําเภอร่อนพิบูลย์ อําเภอชะอวด อําเภอจุฬาภรณ์ และอําเภอพระพรหม ในเขตเทือกเขานี้มีภูเขาสูงสุดในจังหวัด คือเขาหลวง ซึ่งสูงประมาณ ๑,๘๓๕ เมตร เหนือระดับน้ำทะเล นอกจากนี้เทือกเขาดังกล่าวยังเป็นเส้นแบ่งเขตอําเภอ ระหว่างอําเภอทุ่งสง อําเภอฉวาง กับ อําเภอชะอวด อําเภอร่อนพิบูลย์ อําเภอลานสกา อําเภอเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช อําเภอพรหมคีรี อําเภอท่าศาลา และเป็นเส้นแบ่งเขตจังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราช กับอําเภอบ้านนาสาร อําเภอกาญจนดิษฐ์ จังหวัดสุราษฏร์ธานี อีกด้วย
บริเวณเทือกเขาตอนกลางนี้ มีเส้นทางคมนาคมผ่านจากบริเวณที่ราบชายฝั่ง ตะวันออก ไปยังบริเวณที่ราบด้านตะวันตกได้ ซึ่งข้ามจากอําเภอสิชล อําเภอขนอม สู่เขตอําเภอกาญจนดิษฐ์ จังหวัดสุราษฏร์ธานี (ทางหลวงหมายเลข ๔๐) และ จากอําเภอลานสกา ไปสู่อําเภอฉวาง ในเขตจังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราช (ทางหลวง หมายเลข ๔๐๕) และจาก อําเภอร่อนพิบูลย์ ไปสู่อําเภอทุ่งสง (ทางหลวงหมายเลข ๔)
๒. บริเวณที่ราบชายฝั่งด้านตะวันออก
ได้แก่บริเวณตั้งแต่เทือกเขาตอนกลางไปทางตะวันออกถึงฝั่งทะเลอ่าวไทย จําแนกได้ เป็น สองตอน คือ ตั้งแต่อําเภอเมืองนครศรีธรรมราชลงไปทางใต้ เป็นที่ราบ ที่มีความกว้างจากบริเวณเทือกเขาตอนกลางไปถึงชายฝั่งทะเลระยะทางประมาณ ๙๕ กิโลเมตร มีแม่น้ำลําคลอง ที่มีต้นน้ำเกิดจากบริเวณเทือกเขาตอนกลางไหลลงสู่อ่าวไทยหลายสาย นับเป็นที่ราบ ซึ่งมีค่าทางเศรษฐกิจของจังหวัด ลําน้ำสําคัญ ได้แก่ แม่น้ำปากพนัง และมี คลองสายเล็ก ในเขต อําเภอเมืองนครศรีธรรมราชอีกหลายสาย เช่น คลองปากพญา และคลองท้ายวังเป็นต้น
อีกบริเวณหนึ่ง คือตั้งแต่อําเภอท่าศาลาขึ้นไปทางทิศเหนือ เป็นบริเวณฝั่งแคบ ๆ ไม่เกิน ๑๕ กิโลเมตร อําเภอที่อยู่ในเขตที่ราบด้านนี้คือ อําเภอขนอม อําเภอสิชล อําเภอท่าศาลา อําเภอเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช อําเภอปากพนัง อําเภอเชียรใหญ่ อําเภอหัวไทร และอําเภอชะอวด
๓. บริเวณที่ราบด้านตะวันตก
ได้แก่ บริเวณที่ราบระหว่างเทือกเขานครศรีธรรมราช และเทือกเขาบรรทัด จึงมี ลักษณะเป็นเนินเขาอยู่เป็นแห่ง ๆ อําเภอที่อยู่บริเวณที่ราบด้านนี้ คือ อําเภอพิปูน อําเภอทุ่งใหญ่ อําเภอฉวาง อําเภอนาบอน อําเภอบางขัน อําเภอถ้ำพรรณรา และอําเภอทุ่งสง ลําน้ำสายสําคัญ ได้แก่ ต้นน้ำของแม่น้ำตาปีไหลผ่าน อําเภอพิปูน อําเภอฉวาง และอําเภอทุ่งใหญ่ นอกจากนี้ ยังมีลําน้ำที่เป็นต้นน้ำของแม้น้ำตรังอีกด้วย คือน้ำตกโยง ในเขตอำเภอทุ่งสง และคลองวังหีบ ซึ่งไหลผ่าน อําเภอทุ่งสง ไปยังอําเภอห้วยยอด จังหวัดตรัง และออกทะเลอันดามัน ที่อําเภอกันตัง
กำลังทหารรักษาด้ามขวานทอง
จากสถานการณ์ชองโลกที่พัฒนาไป รัฐบาลไทย โดยกระทรวงกลาโหมพิจารณาเห็นความจำเป็นที่จะต้องมีกำลังทหารไว้รักษาเอกราช และอธิปไตยทางภาคใต้ ใน พ.ศ.๒๔๘๓ กระทรวงกลาโหมได้จัดตั้งหน่วยทหารบก และทหารอากาศ ในภาคใต้หลายหน่วย พื้นที่ภาคใต้ตอนกลางได้จัดตั้งสองกองพัน คือ
กองพันทหารราบที่ ๓๙ (ร.พัน ๓๙) ที่ จว.นครศรีธรรมราช
กองพันทหารราบที่ ๔๐ (ร.พัน ๔๐) ที่ จว.ตรัง
จากราชบุรี สู่ นครศรีธรรมราช
และเนื่องจากได้มีการจัดตั้งหน่วยทหารบกขึ้นหลายหน่วยในภาคใต้ จึงได้ย้าย กองบัญชาการมณฑลทหารบกที่ ๕ จากตำบลพงสวาย อำเภอเมืองราชบุรี มาตั้งที่ตำบลปากพูน อำเภอเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช เพื่อปกครองบังคับบัญชาหน่วยทหารในภาคใต้ ซึ่งรวมทั้ง กองพันทหารปืนใหญ่ที่ ๑๕ ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ที่ตำบลปากพูน ก่อนแล้ว และกองพันทหารราบที่ ๕ ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ที่ค่ายคอหงส์ อำเภอหาดใหญ่ ด้วย และต่อมาได้เปลี่ยนนามหน่วยเป็น มณฑลทหารบกที่ ๖
ในสมัยที่กล่าวถึงนี้ นายพลตรี หลวงเสนาณรงค์ เป็นผู้บัญชาการมณฑลทหารบกที่ ๖

ในตอนบ่าย คลื่นลมแรงขึ้นทุกที ทหารญี่ปุ่นตื่นเต้น และเป็นที่วิตกว่า การยกพลขึ้นบกในคืนนี้ (คืนวันที่ ๗ - ๘ ธันวาคม) น่าจะเป็นไปอย่างยากลำบาก แน่นอน
เวลา ๒๐๐๐ สถานีวิทยุ บี.บี.ซี. ก็ออกข่าวอีกว่า เครื่องบินลาดตระเวนของอังกฤษตรวจพบเรือรบญี่ปุ่นเคลื่อนเข้ามาในอ่าวไทย
ฝ่ายข้าศึก
ทหารญี่ปุ่น ที่ขึ้นที่ชุมพร,สุราษฏร์ และนครศรีธรรมราช เป็นหน่วยใน กองทัพที่ ๑๕ ซึ่งพลโท โซจิโร อิอิดะ Shojiro Iida เป็นแม่ทัพ
ส่วนขึ้นบกที่ที่นครศรีธรรมราช มีกำลัง ๑ กรมทหารราบ ,๑ กรมทหารช่าง,๑ กรมช่างอากาศ ใช้เรือลำเลียง ๓ ลำ คือ Miike Maru, Toho Maru และ Zenyo Maru ไม่มีเรือคุ้มกัน

สงขลา
ประมาณ ๐๑๐๐ หน่วยจู่โจมญี่ปุ่นลงเรือเล็กลอบขึ้นฝั่งบริเวณป่าสน แหลมทราย ซึ่งอยู่เหนือสุดของหาดสงขลา และเคลื่อนที่เข้ายึดสถานที่ราชการในจังหวัดสงขลา เช่น ศาลากลางจังหวัด สถานีตำรวจ สถานีรถไฟ ที่ทำการไปรษณีย์โทรเลข และตัดสายโทรศัพท์ โทรเลข ด้วย แต่เจ้าหน้าที่ไปรษณีย์สงขลาสามารถส่งโทรเลขให้นายไปรษณีย์นครศรีธรรมราชทราบได้
ข่าวศึกถึงเมืองคอน
เวลาประมาณ ๐๒๓๐ นายไปรษณีย์นครศรีธรรมราชได้รับโทรเลขจากนายไปรษณีย์สงขลา ตวามว่า ญึ่ปุ่นได้ส่งเรือรบ ประมาณ ๑๕ ลำมาที่อ่าวสงขลและลำเลียงพลขึ้นบก
เวลาประมาณ ๐๖๓๐ นายพลตรี หลวงเสนาณรงค์ ผู้บัญชาการมณฑลทหารบกที่ ๖ ได้รับทราบทราบข่าวศึกจากโทรเลข ฉบับดังกล่าว ได้สั่งให้เป่าแตรเหตุสำคัญ พร้อมทั้งประชุมผู้บังคับหน่วยขึ้นตรง และนายทหารชั้นผู้ใหญ่ของมณฑลทหารบกที่ ๖ ทันที
(โทรเลขจากสงขลาถึงนายไปรษณีย์นครศรีธรรมราช จะส่งเป็นรหัสมอสส์ คิอเป็นขีด ยาว สั้น สลับกัน ต้องผุ้มี ความรู้เรื่องนี้โดยเฉพาะ จึงสามารถอ่าน และแปลงเป็นภาษาไทย หากข้อความยาวมาก การอ่าน การแปลงเป็นภาษาไทย และเขียนเป็นข้อความก็ต้องใช้เวลานาน - ปัจจุบัน มีเครื่องมือสื่อสารที่สะดวก รวดเร็ว และแน่นอนกว่า โทรเลข การสื่อสารแห่งประเทศไทยจึงเลิกใช้โทรเลขแล้ว)
เหตุสำคัญ - ปฏิบัติตามแผนป้องกันการรุกราน
ฝนเริ่มตกประปราย และ หนักขึ้น หนักขึ้น
ประมาณ ๐๗๐๐ ขณะที่กำลังประชุมกันอยู่นั้น ก็มีนายสิบ พลทหาร ของป.พัน ๑๕ ซึ่งมีที่ตั้งอยู่ส่วนเหนือสุดของค่ายฯ ใกล้คลองท่าแพ ได้เข้ามารายงานต่อที่ประชุมว่าได้พบกองทหารญี่ปุ่นจำนวนมาก ไม่สามารถประมาณได้ ลำเลียงด้วยเรือท้องแบนเข้ามาตามคลองท่าแพ และขึ้นที่บ้านท่าแพ
ผู้บัญชาการมณฑลทหารบกที่ ๖ จึงสั่งการให้ทุกหน่วยปฏิบัติตามแผนป้องกันการรุกรานจากกองทหารต่างประเทศทันที กล่าวคือ
๑. ร.พัน ๓๙
- จัด ๑ กองร้อย ต้านทานญี่ปุ่นที่ตลาดท่าแพ เป็น สองแนว แนวแรก อยู่ที่ตลาดท่าแพ แนวที่สอง แนวบานพักนายทหาร ป.พัน ๑๕ กับ โรงนอนทหาร ป.พัน ๑๕
- จัดกำลังส่วนที่เหลือ ยึดภูมิประเทศด้านตะวันออกของหน่วย เพื่อป้องกันญี่ปุ่นด้านทิศตะวันออก
๒. ป.พัน ๑๕ - ตั้งยิงที่หน้า และข้างๆ โรงเก็บปืนใหญ่ของหน่วย
๓. หน่วยพลาธิการ มณฑลทหารบกที่ ๖ เสริมกำลังกองรักษาการณ์ของ ป.พัน ๑๕ ด้านท่าแพ
๔. ส.พัน ๖ เป็นกองหนุน
๕. หน่วยเสนารักษ์ มณฑลทหารบกที่ ๖ จัดเปลออกไปรับคนเจ็บออกจากการรบ และขนเวชภัณฑ์ สัมภาระมีค่าออกจากแนวรบ
ประมาณ ๐๙๐๐ ยุวชนทหารจากหน่วยฝึกยุวชนทหาร ที่ ๕๕ นครศรีธรรมราช ประมาณ ๓๐ คน เข้าเสริมกำลัง ส.พัน ๖

แล้วให้รอฟังคำสั่ง
เมื่อได้รับคำสั่งจากกองทัพบกแล้ว ผู้บัญชาการมณฑลทหารบกที่ ๖ ได้สั่งการให้เสนาธิการมณฑลทหารบกที่ ๖ เป็นผู้ไปเจรจาตกลงกับฦ่ายญี่ปุ่น โดยมี นายร้อยเอก สะอาด ขมะสุนทร และ จ่าสิบเอก กุญชร พรสิงห์ เป็นคณะผู้ติดตาม
เวลาประมาณ ๑๒๐๐ การยิงโต้ตอบกันได้ยุติอย่างเด็ดขาด
เวลา ๑๓๐๐ นายพลตรี หลวงเสนาณรงค์ ผู้บัญชาการมณฑลทหารบกที่ ๖ เป็นประธานในการประชุมร่วม ไทย - ญี่ปุ่น เพื่อตกลงกันในรายละเอียด ซึ่งได้ข้อตกลงกัน ดังนี้
๑. ญี่ปุ่นต้องการใช้สนามบินด่วน จึงขอให้ฝ่ายไทยถอยให้พ้นแนวคลองหน้าเมือง (สะพานราเมศร์)
๒. ขอเข้าพักอาศัยในโรงทหาร ทั้งหมด ทหารไทย รวมทั้งครอบครัวทั้งนายทหาร นายสิบ ต้องออกไปหาที่พักในตัวเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช เช่น บ้านญาติ มิตร วัด โรงเรียน ฯลฯ
๓. ฝ่ายญี่ปุ่นขอให้ทหารไทยนำไปเฉพาะ สัมภาระติดตัว และอาวุธประจำกาย เท่านั้น
๔. ฝ่ายญี่ปุ่นแสดงตวามเสียใจที่เกิดการปะทะกัน รู้สีกเห็นใจ และยกย่องชมเชยวีรกรรมของทหารไทยในครั้งนี้

เวลาประมาณ ๑๓๐๐ สถานีวิทยุกระจายเสียงแห่งประเทศไทยของกรมโฆษณาการ (กรมประชาสัมพันธ์ในปัจจุบัน) ได้ประกาศว่า รัฐบาลไทยตกลงให้ทหารญี่ปุ่นเคลื่อนกำลังผ่านประเทศไทยได้
ถึงแม้ว่ามีแผนการปฏิบัติอยู่แล้วก็ตาม แต่ในเหตุการณ์จริง มีปัจจัยเวลาเข้ามาเกี่ยวข้องด้วยอย่างมาก เพราะข้าศึกมาถึงหน้าบ้านแล้ว ผมมีหลักฐานเป็นรายงานของผู้บัญชาการมณฑลทหารบกที่ ๖ ถึง ผู้บัญชาการทหารบก ที่ ๘๕/๘๔ ลงวันที่ ๑๕ ธันวาคม ๒๔๘๔ ลองอ่านรายงาน (บางส่วน)ของท่านดูนะครับ
. . . การอำนวยการรบทำไม่ได้สะดวกนัก เพราะตลอดเวลาตั้งแต่ ๐๗.๐๐ น. - ๑๑.๐๐ น. ฝนได้ตกมาอย่างหนัก จริงอยู่ ก่อนที่หน่วยทหารจะเข้ายึดแนวนั้น ก็ได้เตรียมตัวไว้แล้ว แต่โดยที่เหตุการณ์ไม่แจ่มแจ้งพอ คือไม่ทราบว่าทางฝ่ายญี่ปุ่นมีกำลังขึ้นบกจริงๆ สักเท่าใด ที่ใดบ้าง แนวจึงสับสนกันอยู่บ้าง แต่ถึงกระนั้น ก็นับว่าได้ปฏิบัติการทันเหตุการณ์ กล่าวคือ พอกระผมสั่งการต่อสู้ต้านทาน เจ้าหน้าที่ต่างๆ ก็เริ่มดำเนินงานตามหน้าที่ของตน หน่วยทหารก็เคลื่อนที่เข้าประจำแนวตามลำดับ อนึ่ง เมื่อได้รับคำสั่งจากผู้บังคับบัญชาแล้ว ได้ปฏิบัติตามอย่างรวดเร็ว กล้าหาญ เป็นที่น่าชมเชยยิ่ง ไม่ม่แม้แต่คนเดียวที่แสดงความอิดเอื้อน หรือหวาดกลัว บางคนที่ไม่มีหน้าที่รบโดยตรง เช่น พลทหารประจำตัวเป็นต้น ก็ได้มารับจ่ายอาวุะกระสุน และอาสาเข้าทำการรบด้วย . . . การต่อสู้ได้ดำเนินไปอย่างรุนแรงตลอดเวลา ฝ่ายเราได้รุกไปข้างหน้าตามลำดับ บางส่วนได้เข้าถึงตัวฝ่ายตรงข้าม และแทงด้วยดาบปลายปืน และปรากฏว่า เมื่อ เสธ.มณฑล ได้ไปเห็นในขณะที่ไปเจรจายุคิการรบนั้น ทางฝ่ายญี่ปุ่นได้แสดงท่าทีล่าถอยกลับไปอยู่แล้ว . . .
นอกจากรายงานดังกล่าวแล้ว นายพลตรี หลวงเสนาณรงค์ ท่านยังได้บันทึกไว้อีกว่า . . . การรบเป็นไปโดยกระชั้นชิด ในเวลาอันรวดเร็ว ฝ่ายเราได้รุกเข้าไปจนถึงท่าเรือ ห่างจากข้าศึกเพียง ๑๐๐ เมตร ส่วนย่อยของเราได้เข้าตะลุมบอน เสียงไชโยดังลั่นทุกแนวที่เรายึดคืนได้ "ข้าศึกถอยแล้ว" เราร้องบอกกัน
. . . ไม่มีครั้งใดที่จะได้เห็นการต่อสู้อย่างทรหด จนถึงตะลุมบอนเหมือนอย่างในครั้งนี้ ฝ่ายเขาเข้าใจว่าจะเสียหายมากกว่าเรามาก . . . ผลการรบในวันนั้น
ฝ่ายข้าศึก ตายมาก ผู้บังคับการของข้าศึกตายในที่รบ . . .
ฝ่ายเรา ต้องสูญเสียนายทหารสัญญาบัตร ๓ นาย ชั้นประทวน ๔ นาย พลทหาร ๓๒ นาย และบาดเจ็บเป็นร้อย
อนุสาวรีย์วีรไทย พ.ศ.๒๔๘๔
เมื่อเหตุการณ์สงบ และสถานการณ์ของประเทศเอื้ออำนวยพี่น้องประชาชนทุกหมู่เหล่าในภาคใต้ และจังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราช มีความประสงค์จะสร้างอนุสาวรีย์เพื่อเป็นเกียรติประวัติแก่เหล่านักรบผู้หาญกล้า พลตรี หลวงเสนาณรงค์ ซึ่งเป็นผู้บัญชาการรบในครั้งนั้น ได้เป็นผู้ดำเนินการจัดสร้าง ซึ่งทุกฝ่าย ทุกส่วน ได้ร่วมมือ สนับสนุนเป็นอย่างดี และทางราชการได้ให้เงินอุดหนุนเพิ่มเติมในเวลาต่อมาด้วย
การก่อสร้างและตกแต่งได้แล้วเสร็จเรียบร้อย เมื่อ วันที่ ๘ ธันวาคม ๒๔๙๒ ได้รับขนานนามว่า
อนุสาวรีย์วีรไทย พ.ศ.๒๔๘๔
ตั้งอยู่ในค่ายทหารที่ตำบลปากพูน
ณ บริเวณซึ่งเป็นจุดที่รบกันรุนแรงถึงขั้นประจันบาน หันไปทางเหนือ (ท่าแพ) ซึ่งญี่ปุ่นยกกำลังเข้ามา
เป็นรูปทหารในเครื่องแบบสนามตรบครัน ขนาด สองเท่าของคนจริง ถือปืนเล็กยาว แบบ ๖๖ ติดดาบ ในท่าก้มตัว เตรียมแทง
ตั้งอยู่บนฐาน ๖ เหลี่ยม สูง ประมาณ ๖ เมตร
ภายในบรรจุอัฐิทหารที่เสียชีวิตในการรบ เมื่อ ๘ ธันวาคม ๒๔๘๔ ในภาคใต้ ซึ่งมีทั้งสิ้น ๑๑๖ นาย
๕๐ ปี วีรไทย
ในโอกาส วันวีรไทยครบ ๕๐ ปี ๘ ธันวาคม ๒๕๓๔ กองทัพภาคที่ ๔ ซึ่งเป็นหน่วยที่เผชิญกับกองทัพญี่ปุ่น ตั้งแต่ ชุมพร ถึง ปัตตานี ได้เห็นว่า
" . . . ประวัติศาสตร์ของเหตุการณ์ครั้งนั้นจะลบเลือนไปตามกาลเวลา จึงจัดประชุมผู้รู้ที่อยู่ในเหตุการณ์สงครามครั้งนั้นขึ้น . . ."
และได้ทำเอกสารไว้เพื่ออ้างอิงในโอกาสหน้า . . .
จากปี ๒๔๘๔ ถึง ปีนี้ ๒๕๕๒ เกือบ ๗๐ ปี ที่ ท่านทั้งหลายได้สละเลือด เนื้อ และชีวิตเป็นชาติพลี เป็นแบบฉบับให้อนุชนถือเป็นเยี่ยงอย่างสืบไป

ผมได้รับราชการที่เมืองคอน รวมสิบกว่าปี มากกว่าจังหวัดอื่นๆ ที่เคยอยู่ (อ.ทุ่งสง และอ.เมืองนครฯ) รู้สึกประทับใจในเรื่องดีๆ มาก ข้าราชการเราอยู่ที่ไหนก็รับใช้ประชาชนทั้งนั้น แต่ถ้าได้อยู่ใกล้บ้านเกิด พ่อแม่ พี่น้อง และญาติ ก็อบอุ่น ทุ่มเทให้การงานได้มากขึ้นนะครับ
